SCHIZOPHRENIA

ANNICK (20 minutes) The story of a young woman’s life which was dramatically changed when she developed schizophrenia. As a result, her parents created NARSAD artworks to raise money for research. As a scientist, her sister has become involved in seeking cures for mental illness. Originally aired on “60 minutes”.

 

I’M STILL HERE: THE TRUTH ABOUT SCHIZOPHRENIA (60 minutes) Those suffering from schizophrenia share how the illness has impacted their lives.  Up-to-date research strategies are discussed.

 

LIVING WITH SCHIZOPHRENIA (39 minutes) The video, produced in Australia, features firsthand accounts of people with schizophrenia who discuss what they consider to be important for remaining healthy.

 

PEACE OF MIND (60 minutes) Produced by CNN, this video provides insight into the tumultuous lives of persons with schizophrenia and their families. Includes a segment on Lionel Aldridge.

 

PREVENTING RELAPSES IN SCHIZOPHRENIA: THE CUTTING EDGE MEDICAL REPORT (30 minutes) Program discusses relapse in terms of prevention through treatment involving medication, therapy, and support. Those suffering from schizophrenia share their stores.

 

SCHIZOPHRENIA: CAPTIVE OF THE MIND (29 minutes) Program looks at how medical science is helping persons with schizophrenia reclaim their lives.

 

SCHIZOPHRENIA: STOLEN LIVES, STOLEN MINDS (52 minutes) This Discovery Channel video creates awareness of schizophrenia by interviewing those with the illness as well as scientists who are involved in research. Includes information about the brain’s structure and how it functions.

 

SCHIZOPHRENIA: VOICES OF AN ILLNESS (60 minute cassette tape) Narrated by Jason Robards, this documentary features 11 people who provide intimate, first person accounts of their experiences with the thought disorder.  Also includes comments by clinicians, researchers, and mental health advocates.

 

TO PAINT THE STARS: THE LIFE AND MIND OF VINCENT VAN GOGH (60 minutes) The video examines the biographical and psychological evidence of Van Gogh’s life.  More than 150 paintings serve to illustrate the painter’s artistic career which was influenced by a mental disorder.

 

UNDERSTANDING RELAPSE: MANAGING THE SYMPTOMS OF SCHIZOPHRENIA (63 minute video with study guide) The relapse rate for schizophrenia is quite common.  Mary Moller, a psychiatric nurse, shares practical tips on identifying and managing early symptoms of relapse.

 

VIRTUAL HALLUCINATIONS (audiocassette). The cassette dramatizes severe auditory hallucinations that might be experienced by someone with schizophrenia.
