Welcome to Mindful Monday! 

 

As we begin celebrating Thanksgiving this week, we will focus on what we are grateful for. Many of us will go around the table and share what we appreciate in our lives, and this practice does wonders for boosting our sense of connection and lowering our levels of stress. However, just as important as gratitude is the practice of generosity. 

 

When we give kindness and compassion to others without expectations, it not only helps someone else, but we are also enriched. Notice how you feel as you practice generosity. We become happier more connected to others. Also, generosity often requires us to step outside of our comfort zones, creating an expanded view of ourselves and what we think we are capable of. While our acts of generosity are amazing gifts to others, we too are changed by the process.

 

During the holidays, we often think of generosity in terms of gift giving, or donating money. While these ideas are wonderful for those with the means to do so, generosity does not need to cost more than the time it takes to hold a door or give a smile to someone who needs it. Here are a few ideas on how you can practice generosity this holiday season (and beyond)!

 

  • Support the work of a charity or nonprofit you love on Giving Tuesday.
     

  • Donate your time, energy, or canned goods to a local food pantry.
     

  • Walk (or adopt!) a dog at the Humane Society.
     

  • Arrange a visit at a local nursing home or care center.
     

  • Shovel a neighbor's walk after the next snowfall.
     

  • Hold doors for others.
     

  • Buy coffee for the person in line behind you.
     

  • Give the gift of mindfulness: Give your full presence and attention to someone you care about.
